연날리기는 지금도 행하여지는 민속놀이로, 오락성과 민속신앙적인 양면성을 지닌다. 먼저 민속신앙적인 놀이로는 ‘액막이 연날리기’를 들 수 있는데, 옛날부터 정월 대보름날이면 연에 ‘厄’자 또는 ‘送厄’이라 써서 높이 날려 보냄으로써 액을 쫓아보낸다는 풍습이 전해지고 있다.
